Class 2

Welcome Back Class 2!

Welcome back to school for the Spring Term! Mrs Rogers and I hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas holiday and you have enjoyed spending quality time with your families. We are looking forward to getting stuck in this half term to our new topic 'Masterchef'.

We have many exciting lessons and activities planned for this half term. Here you will be able to find out more about these.

Literacy

In the first half term, we will be writing different text types linked to our topic of ‘Masterchef’. We will be writing recounts, recipes, stories, letters and information posters. We will be focusing on English, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. The children will be learning what adverbs are and how to use them to improve their writing. Our writing will be relating to the end of Year Two expectations which are on the school website.

We have been reading the book 'The Disgusting Sandwich'. We made our own disgusting sandwiches using a variety of ingredients (We didn't think they were tasty enough to eat). We will now be writing recipes for the sandwiches that we created. What fun it has been!

Maths

In maths we will be starting to look at division. We will begin by sharing and grouping and then move on to answer problem solving and reasoning questions relating to division.

We will then move on to statistics. We will draw tally charts, create and interpret pictograms and use data to create block diagrams.

Later this half term we will focus on fractions. I would like the children to be able to identify 1/3, 1/4, 1/2, 2/4, 3/4 and knows that all parts must be equal parts of the whole. All areas covered are related to the end of Year 2 expectations which can be found on the school website.

Science

In Science we will be focusing on ‘Animals including Humans.’ We will link this to our topic as we will be finding out about and describing the basic needs of animals, including humans. We will look at what is needed for survival (water, food and air). We will also be describing the importance of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of foods and hygiene.

R.E.

In R.E. we will be focusing on Islam and special ways of living. We will be looking at their community in both the UK and other countries. We will be looking at similarities and differences between Christianity and Islam. We will be creating a timeline to show special events in our own lives and we will be writing a letter to explain why these events have been important to us.

Topic

Our topic work will be based on ‘Masterchef’. We will be cooking some simple food as well as designing our own menus. We will also be finding out where different foods come from in the world. We will compare the foods we eat today to the foods eaten during the Stone Age. We will also be focusing on the artist Giuseppe Acrimboldo and creating self-portraits using a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Please see some of our fabulous work we have already created which is based on the Artist Guiseppe Arcimboldo's work.

(I think these are amazing).

Homework is set on a Thursday and is due in on the following Tuesday. Please make sure your child has a labelled water bottle in school.

Please continue to hear your child read on a daily basis. It is very important the children are reading for at least 5 minutes every day in order to continue developing their word recognition and comprehension skills. If they are feeling tired you could read to them and ask them questions about the story. Thank you for your continued support with this.
