South Woodham Ferrers lies midway between Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea in Essex. It is largely a product of the 20th century, in that it was not until 1913 that the name South Woodham Ferrers
was formally adopted to identify the settlement emerging in the southern part of the parish of Woodham Ferrers.
The town is surrounded on three sides by water - the tidal River Crouch, and the two creeks of Fenn Creek and Clementsgreen Creek.
The increased housing demands in the South East in the early 1970's led to the expansion of the town into one with a population of around 20,000.
There is a town centre dominated by the superstore ASDA. There are six primary schools and a community centre which houses the William de Ferrers Secondary School,
the local library and sports facilities.
